Everything You Need to Know about Roof Styles
Basic Roof Styles
There are four types of roofs. A flat roof is the most common. It's not installed entirely level or they would not allow for any runoff. They're less expensive to install and maintain by Pittsburgh contractors as well as simpler to use.
Skillion Roof
A skillion roof is one which is placed on top of a building at an angle with one wall being higher than another.
Gabled Roof
A gabled or gable roofing system is the one that covers the roofing. It appears to be an upside down V that is not affixed to the wall. The gable is the upside-down V that is at the end. Gable roofs are simple and have a single central ridge.
Hipped Roof
A roof that connects all the walls horizontally , is a hipped roof or hip roof. The standard hipped roof is designed with one central ridge. However, instead of being angled vertically , as in the triangle of the gable, it has two ridges known as hips.
Cross Gabled and Hipped Cross Hipped
Many houses aren't simply rectangular or square. A T-shaped or L-shaped house may have two gable roofings that connect at an inside angle. This is known as a cross gabled roof.
Hipped roofs have the same. The L or T shape may be covered by a cross hipped roof.
Mix and Match
Roofs can be a mix of these basic styles - you might have a gabled or gable roof in a right angle with a Hipped roof. Sometimes for ornamental reasons, the hipped roof as well as the Gable roof are arranged on the same plane , in a style called Dutch Gable.
Other Styles
These basic shapes can be combined with other designs. For instance, an A-frame is a more extreme style of gable. Another type of gable is the gambrel roof. It is a barn roof that has the top of the roof gently sloped and then an incline that is steep. A mansard roof features the same gentle and steep pitches but is hipped , not gabled.
These styles can have practical applications. Gambrel roofs provide more space and allow for better snow removal than roofs that have more slope.
Gabled roofs are generally less expensive to construct than hipped roofs, although Hipped roofs are more resistant to strong winds. It all comes down to the individual's taste. Siding Pittsburgh, contractors also said that all the roofing styles work well to keep rain from coming in and won't fall away if they're well secured. So it's the design of the roof that matters.
